Today marks the “kick off” or as the class preferred “Send Off” of the first Genesis Study Class. This class will be meeting every Thursday Morning at the Church at 9 am. They are slowing down and taking the time to examine the book of Genesis. The teacher of the course is Dr. James “Mickey” Efird.
“He is Professor Emeritus at Duke Divinity School, having taught thousands of seminarians Greek and Biblical studies. Most say Mickey is their favorite Bible teacher, combining the knowledge of a scholar with communications skills that make his teaching easy to understand. ”
A brief bio about Mickey Efird according to his website about his Bible study:
Mickey received his A.B. degree from Davidson College and then earned his Masters of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. Mickey intended to become a pulpit minister but decided he needed further education. While working on his Ph. D. he began teaching as a graduate student at the Duke University Divinity School and soon discovered his true passion was teaching, joining the faculty full time in 1962.
Recognized as both an Old Testament and New Testament Scholar, Dr. Efird knows both Hebrew and Greek. Dr. Efird has authored 14 books and published more than 60 articles and papers, many of which can be found in the Harper-Collins One Volume Bible Dictionary. For more than 50 years he has served as an interim supply pastor for various churches.
Bob Weinhold is faciliatating the discussion around this class and seems like a class worthwhile.
New Membership Class
Ever since at least the 4th Century Christianity, Lent has been a time in the church year for preparation of new members for baptism. What once was for some a three year process to join the church is now condensed into only six weeks of preparation. All the more reason why these six weeks are ever more important than they were before. If you are interested in becoming a member of Red Valley UMC please set up a time to speak with the Pastor about your intentions as we will be preparing a class to be initiated and welcomed as it was tradition on Easter morning! The class will start Saturday, February 25th and will run through April 1st, with the sending class being welcomed on Easter. Times will become available soon!
