When reflecting on this passage over the past few weeks, I have come to it time and time again as words of strength and power for me to be persistent in my everyday life. We all have at one point in time experienced strife and grief. Think back to the last time you felt helpless and crying out for help. You probably try not to think about these times, but the Lord uses these times to build us up and when I say build us up, I mean use us more powerfully and greater than we will ever know. You felt stuck in the mud and the Lord lifted you up and set your feet on a rock. The rock is a sturdy foundation, a place where you feel safe and able to regain control with the Lord’s help.
Now go back to the days of your childhood and think about the princess in the tower who needs rescuing. This princess was just rescued by her prince charming or in the case of Shrek, by an Ogre. The princess immediately after her rescue, shows her thanks and gratitude and is happy, or more so, thrilled. Now when you have been rescued by the Lord, you will feel the amount of great things the Lord has done for you are more numerous than the grains of sand on the Earth. We now not only want to give to the Lord, but instead we will give to the Lord joyfully and with delight. His love and grace is so much that we give without question. Giving without question, for any of you who was at Annual Conference last year will remember how the Holy Spirit moved through us when giving to the Nothing But Nets campaign. That was a night of giving without question and with delight. I feel that this is the type of joyous giving that the writer of Psalm 40 was talking about when saying “I delight to do your will, On my God;…”.
And still, even when we give happily, we are still bogged down with adversaries. There are still dangers and demons trying to attack us. There are so many that again we feel that we may be stuck right back in that mud again and unable to get back out. We time and time again slip into this mud and plea for God’s help. We ask for help and continually tell of the greatness of Lord and ask that he will confuse our enemies. No matter how lowly we may be, no matter how poor we may be, no matter how weak we are, and no matter how small or unimportant we may feel: “As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.” The Lord our God will never leave our side or our defense. Praise the Lord! Alleluia!
Prayer: Lord and Savior, Please take us and pick us up and set us on your rock and your foundation. Help us learn to trust in you and know your love and grace in our lives. Let us worship you in a joyful and carefree manner and that we may be able to let everyone know of your omniscience and grace. Action Step: Take the time out of the day to praise the Lord for setting our feet on the rock and protecting us from our adversaries and “say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
